  Silky Oak
Botanical Name: Cardwellia sublimis
Common Name(s):
Origin: Australia

OverviewBasic InfoTechnical
General: The wood is straight grained with a coarse but even texture. The colour is pinkish red toning to a dark brown with age. There is sometimes a golden sheen to the wood but the prominent feature is the large rays in the quarter sawn timber/veneer which produce a well marked silver-grain figure.
Seasoning: Dries well with little degrade.
Working: Easily worked however the quarter sawn material presents a problem in planing due to the grain tending to pick up on account of the rays. A reduction of the cutting angle to 20ยบ should overcome this. The timber can be nailed, screwed, glued and stained satisfactorily.
Uses: Fine furniture, high-class joinery, decorative items and panelling.
