The heartwood is vivid blood red toning down to a dark purple-brown with red streaks upon exposure. The grain is straight to interlocked with a moderately coarse texture. Darkens with age. The Heartwood is very Durable. |

Dries well but slowly. |
| Working: |
Despite its density, the wood has only a slight blunting effect on tools and machines easily. It nails, screws, glues and polishes very well and an excellent finish is obtainable. |
| Uses: |
This attractive timber has high strength properties, durability and outstanding stability and is ideal for high-class joinery, furniture and cabinet-making. Also used in fancy turnery, carvings, tool and knife handles, spirit levels, paddles and oars. It has a high resistance to abrasion and makes an excellent heavy-duty flooring timber. Also suitable for floors, where underfloor heating has been installed, because of its dimensional stability. Selected logs are sliced for very attractive decorative veneers. Renowned as a dye wood. |
