OverviewBasic InfoTechnical
General: Balau compromises a group of 15 Shorea species that are native to Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.  It is a heavy, extremely strong and dense timber with high resistance to wear.
Working: The wood is non-siliceous which means that it doesn't blunten saws and knifes too severely. However it doesn't finish to a smooth surface after planing because of its high density and interlocking grain.
Uses: In Malaysia it is commonly used for construction, namely bridges, posts, beams and railway sleepers. In New Zealand it is most commonly used fro heavy duty truck decking.
