Cedar is a timber that is very well suiting to panelling applications, giving great looking and durable results. The timber is also well recognised for use with exterior joinery, house cladding, shingles, shakes, garage doors, outdoor furniture, shutters, louvres, and venetian blinds. It is also commonly known as Western Red Cedar.
DISTRIBUTION
The species grows naturally in British Columbia in Canada, and in the Pacific North West of USA.
The resource is large, but international demand for Clear grades of Western Red Cedar continues to exceed the sawmillers' ability to supply.
QUALITY STANDARDS AND GENERAL PROPERTIES
Traditionally, the timber has been graded to international grading rules (para 40l in the R List of the Canadian grading Rules). More recently some New Zealand importers have developed their own grading rules (PC1 and PC2) which are adaptations of the international rules.
We believe it sensible to comply with the International Rules, and will continue to supply 2C& Better which is fractionally below PC1 but a much higher grade than PC2.
Western Red Cedar is light and very easy to machine and finish.
