Fixings for Decking
  • Nails - Always use annular grooved nails.  Timber decks swell and shrink over time as they get wet and dry out, overtime this can cause nails to be lifted and pop up.  Using annular grooved nails massively reduces this problem.
  • Predrilling - Predrill all holes, especially hardwoods.  This will help minimise splitting, if you are nailing near the edge or end of a hardwood board, predrilling dramatically reduces timber splits.
  • Spacing - Not only do the gaps between decking allow water to run off, they give room for the timber to expand and shrink (as it gets wet and dry), never try to lay a deck with no or a very small gap.  The timber can swell by 5% (even more in certain species), this equates to 4.5mm for 90mm wide decking, so leaving a big gap is crucial.
  • Span - Not all timber decking can span 600mm, most softwoods (and some hardwoods) should only be used over a 450mm span, depending on their thickness.

Fixings for Flooring

  • Glue Type - There are many diferent types of glues available, but it is best to talk to the glue manufacturer (Selleys, Bostik, etc) to get the most up-to-date product information.  Generally speaking when laying over particle board and concrete a screed glue applied with a special comb will ensure an even glue coverage, make sure the concrete is sufficiently dry and/or sealed though.
  • Wide Boards - It is import to face fix all flooring that is wider than 90mm Cover, that is nailing directly through the face and filling or plugging the hole before sanding and coating.  This is to prevent the flooring cupping or peaking (ridges forming along the joins as a result of expansion).  Narrow boards may be secret nailed and/or glued.
We have an in-depth T&G Flooring Installaion page in our Learning Centre.

 Please Note:

 1) RH = Rose Head, JH = Jolt Head
 2) Nail lengths are designed for minimum framing penetration of framing.  It the
thickness of the batten or cladding is varied, then the nail length should be
     adjusted accordingly.
