Kwila is a very popular choice for decking in New Zealand. Until now, customers have not had any good reassurance that the Kwila Decking they purchase is from responsibly managed sources. We are pleased to be the only New Zealand supplier able to offer FSC Certified Kwila Decking from responsibly managed and legal sources, available now!
FSC Kwila as a Decking timber
Kwila has long been the hardwood decking of choice for New Zealanders because of its durability, good availability, relatively low price, and excellent stability.
Benefits of FSC Kwila:Stable - Less likely to shrink or swell than other timbers
Good Length Spread - Lengths range from 1.8 to 5.7M, with an average of over 3.0M
Most commonly used hardwood decking timber in NZ - Tried, trusted and proven over the years
FSC Certified - Means that you are assured that the timber is from a responsibly managed forest
Downsides of FSC Kwila:
Bleeding - Kwila contains a water-soluble red staining tannin which will leech out when the timber gets wet. This means Kwila may not be suitable around pools or over concrete or tile work.
About FSC Certification and Why it is Important
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. The FSC certification system provides internationally recognised standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies, organizations, and communities interested in responsible forestry.
How does FSC certification make a difference in the world’s forests?
When a forest manager decides to become FSC certified, they must conform to all applicable FSC rules before earning FSC certification and the right to use the FSC label. Because managing forests the FSC way means following the highest social and environmental criteria, it often requires managers to adapt their management and operations. This is how FSC has a direct and permanent positive impact on the world’s forests and the people living from, in and around the forest.
How good are the FSC Rules?
The 10 principles and 56 associated criteria form the basis for all FSC forest management standards. Based on this core document, FSC has developed further rules (called policies or standards) that define and explain certain requirements stipulated in the 10 Principles and Criteria.
The FSC Principles and Criteria describe how the forests have to be managed to meet the social, economic, ecological, cultural and spiritual needs of present and future generations. They include managerial aspects as well as environmental and social requirements. FSC rules are the strictest and FSC’s social and environmental requirements are the highest of any certification scheme.
This is why FSC is the only forest certification system that is supported by all major environmental groups. FSC is also the only certification scheme approved for Sustainable Timber points/credits in the Green Building Rating Systems of all of the Green Building Councils of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, UK, and USA.
